Question by Shelby: cyber bullying and harassment with adults.?
okay. its a long story, but I feel the background is necessary in order to be able to answer my question below, so here it goes.
My senior year of high school, a group of 2 girls and 1 boy made a series of images of me. They took pictures of myself off of my facebook and photoshopped them adding words such as “faggot for life” and even included a giant penis with semen on my face. (I am gay). These pictures were posted onto facebook, and I was tagged in them (meaning all of my friends and family could see these images). Offended and hurt, I went to my school’s administration who did absolutely nothing but put in a police report and talk to the people responsible (they were not punished in the slightest bit, they were still allowed to walk in graduation, participate in every senior activity and even sit in the same class room as me).
About six months before this (when I was 17), someone had posted a Craigslist ad using my picture, phone number, name and facebook in the Personals section. The ad was saying I was 18 and looking for a night of “passion” with a man or woman, or both. When the ad was posted, I was at a school function and immediately started getting phone calls, picture messages, etc from random people who were responding to the ad. When I brought it to my school after finding out who posted the ad, again, the school did nothing.
I am now out of high school and in college. One of the girls who made the facebook pictures of me has created another one and this time has threatened death upon me.
I know laws have been passed years ago allowing schools to punish students for cyberbullying, obviously my school did not take this into consideration as they explained the parents of the other students would be angered that their children are being punished (which essentially means they’re promoting this type of bullying), but now that i am out of high school, i am wondering what legal matters i can take to make sure that this issue with these people is resolved.
Also–is it possible to either sue or press charges for harassment?
